| The history of Alice Holt Forest can be traced back over 2,000 years. The forest has belonged to the Crown since William the Conqueror adopted it as a Royal Hunting Forest. It now covers 851 hectares of mainly Corsican pine, with approximately 140 hectares of the original oaks, from the year 1820, still remaining. This ancient forest is famous for its oak trees which once supplied timber for Royal Navy ships. Recently Alice Holt Oak has been used to build the replica of Shakespeare's Globe theatre in London. With its Visitor Centre, whether you go to walk, cycle, picnic, or see the wildlife, there is something at Alice Holt for everyone who loves the countryside. |
